Salt & Pepper Rock
Barged in from British Columbia and pictured below, this rock is 1/2" to 1 3/4" in size and perfect for use as a decorative rock or for use on driveways or walkways because it will pack down.
Sold by the yard, this is one of our more popular types of rock.
3/8" Red Lava Rock
This is an excellent decorative ground cover rock that is trucked in all the way from Goldendale WA (Eastern WA). This size is also used for pathways (However, it doesn't pack down). Some customers even mix it into their topsoil.
This size is about the same as the 3/8" Pea Gravel.
3/4" Red Lava Rock
This rock is an excellent decorative ground cover that is trucked hundreds of miles to get to you, as it comes from Goldendale WA (in Eastern WA). We gonna do what they say can't be done! No, we didn't hire Smokey & the Bandit to truck it over here but it sure is nice to have it avaiable on the wetter side of the mountains too!
Please note: This rock does not pack down so it is not easy to walk on but it sure does look perty!
2"-3" Pink Cinder Rock
What is it? Pink Cinder Rock is the shale, sandstone, clay and siltstone, fired pink by the intense heat from burning in old coal slag piles. We carry 1”-3” pink cinder rock.
Where does it come from? The story of Pink Cinder Rock began over a century ago when miners came in search of coal. They found millions of tons of the black colored “diamonds” needed by the growing cities of Seattle and San Francisco. In the early days, the miners sought only the purest coal of highest quality and discarded everything else. Unfortunately, the coal seams were not pure, but contained veins of lower quality coal, shale, sandstone, clays and other minerals. These other materials were often referred to as slag. From the underground mines, small rail cars brought the coal and slag to the surface. There, the outside miners separated the good clean coal from the lower quality coal and slag. The top quality coal was sold while the waste slag was dumped in large piles adjacent to the mine portal. Through a process known as spontaneous combustion, the piles caught fire and burned for years. Once burning, the slag was nearly impossible to extinguish and the piles smoldered for years at temperatures exceeding 2,000° F. The intense heat from the burning of coal fused the shale, sandstone, clay, and silt together while iron pyrites found in the famous McKay coal seam caused the burned slag to turn pink. This giant “oven” has been compared to the brick-making process so the pink cinder rock is often referred to as “nature’s brick”.
The circumstances which led to the creation of pink cinder rock will almost certainly never be repeated. Today, all the mined coal is valuable, hence very little burnable coal is discarded with the slag. Strict mining laws prohibit the creation of large waste piles in order to prevent the spontaneous combustion of slag. The pink color was provided by a special bed of coal known as the McKay and this seam has been depleted. The pink cinder rock we have today, though a wonder to behold and a great landscaping material, will be exhausted soon. If you are interested at all, get it now before we run out and it is gone for good.
Pink cinder rock has a unique history, yet has found a second life in running tracks, driveways, flower beds and landscapes throughout the Puget Sound area.
